BRAKE FAILURE
When a brake shoe has seized on, the heat buildup is considerable with the heat directly penetrating through the stud and nut. As the temperature on the nut rises in excess of 120ºC (248ºF), the wheel-check will begin to blister around the circumference which the driver will see on his walk around. BEARING FAILURE
When a bearing is about to seize, the temps within the hub area rise to thousands of degrees in fahrenheit. This heat is transferred by conduction through the wheel to the stud and on to the nut. As the temperature on the nut rises in excess of 120ºC (248ºF), the wheel-check will begin to blister around the circumference, eventually distorting. The same characteristics as above.
