CAT'S BIG 600 LEADS '98 LINEUP....WHEEL SECURITY
Endorsed by several major Canadian fleets, a simple visual system for finding loose wheel fasteners has been introduced to Canada by Wheel-Check. It consists of washer-like yellow plastic tabs with a pointer extension that fit over all nuts on a wheel. When first installed, with proper fastener torque, the tabs all point in the same direction. When a nut comes loose, the tab moves out of that pattern, instantly identifying the problem. It will also move when subjected to extreme heat such as that caused by overheating hub or brake. Provided they do their circle check, drivers can't miss it. The other advantage is that the system minimizes arbitrary, periodic re-torquing and every three re-torquings, a wheel fastener should be replaced. The tabs cost less than a dollar each in small quantities. They're dimensionally stable and are impervious to road salt and petrochemicals.
