EDITORIAL: THE HAMILTON SPECTATOR
WOMAN KILLED BY FLYING TIRE ON QEW
Andrew Collins/Special to The Hamilton Spectator
Monday, October 15, 2012

A woman was killed Monday night when a tire flew off a pickup truck and struck her car as she drove along the Toronto-bound lanes of the QEW.

Ontario Provincial Police have no new updates this morning after a woman was killed by a flying tire Monday night on the QEW.

The woman, whose identity has not been released, was driving alone in the Toronto-bound lanes when a tire flew off of a pickup truck and slammed into her car just before 7 p.m.

The truck was travelling in the Niagara-bound lanes. The tire flew over the median when it struck her car. She was rushed to Hamilton General hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The OPP shut down the Toronto-bound lanes of the QEW at Centennial Parkway for more than three hours while they investigated. Traffic was backed up all the way to Fruitland Road.

Police have not released any details about the victim, or the pickup truck driver. They are in the process of notifying the victim’s family, said OPP Constable Linda Wolf on Monday night.

Both vehicles have been towed from the scene and police reopened the QEW at 10 p.m. Monday.

“We have to let the investigation run its course,” Wolf said of any potential charges. “We’re going to have to thoroughly investigate that other vehicle, its history, whether it was in for repairs … all kinds of questions.”

Miroslawa Chmielewski, a 54-year-old Hamilton mother of three, was killed just under a year ago when a fly-away transport truck tire flew over the median and struck her car in the Niagara-bound lanes of the QEW at North Shore Boulevard.

Any witnesses to Monday’s collision are asked to call the Burlington detachment of the OPP at 905-681-2511.
